Making Crayons

Want to do something useful with all those old broken crayons lying around in the bottom of your child's art box? Turn them into new crayons!!

It is much simpler than I thought, minus the experimentation process that we had with finding the best mold. In the end we didn't get to use our festive hearts and other shapes, but instead settled for a paper lined mini-muffin pan. Advice I ignored from other sites was to find a pan at a thrift store that you don't mind ruining.......we didn't end up ruining ours, but it did require far more cleaning than is generally tolerable. Anyway.

After you peel the paper off of all your crayons break them up into small pieces (the smaller, the better) and fill your molds almost to the top.

Turn your oven up to 300 and pop them in there for a couple of minutes. The amount of time will depend on the size of your molds and how small you broke up your crayons. Just keep an eye on them, you'll know when they're ready.

Now, they'll obviously be pretty darn hot. And unless you have all day to wait around you're going to want them to harden up pretty quickly. So I pop them in the freezer for about 5 minutes. Until the pan is cool enough to handle and the crayons are firm when you gently touch them.

Peel off the paper carefully and color away with your new fabulous crayons!
Ours sort of resemble little Reese's Peanut Butter cups, I guess I'll have to keep an eye on any hungry little artists.

We just cleaned out all of the broken crayons and did this project. We are waiting for the crayons to cool right now. Thanks for the great idea.
